The quiet return of urban rivers

For much of the last century, many cities buried their small rivers under roads and car parks. Today, a growing number of planners are bringing them back into the open air. Opened rivers cool the streets around them and give fish and birds a way back into the centre.

In Seoul, a motorway was removed to uncover the Cheonggyecheon stream, and the new park now draws thousands of visitors a day.
